What is Lariam?
Lariam is an anti-malarial medication manufactured by the company Roche. It contains the active ingredient mefloquine hydrochloride which is effective in preventing malaria infection in a number of countries across the world. Lariam comes in the form of a 250mg tablet that can be split and is taken once a week.
How does it work?
Mefloquine works by targeting the plasmodium parasite and stopping it from reproducing. It is effective at targeting parasites in areas where they have developed immunity to other antimalarials, like chloroquine. Lariam can also be used to treat active malarial strains, however, this should be done under the supervision of a doctor and monitored regularly.
When do I need to take it?
• Lariam is taken on a weekly basis, at the same time each week, with or after food.• You should begin taking Lariam two weeks before you visit an area affected by Malaria. • Continue to take it throughout your trip. • Finally, you should continue to take it for four weeks after you return home. You must take Lariam for these four weeks post travel to cover Malarias incubation period. Lariam dosage depends on the individual taking the medication. Adults that weigh above 45kg should take one entire tablet per week.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding?
Lariam is not suitbale if you’re either breastfeeding or pregnant. Whilst taking Lariam and three months after finishing your course, you should make adequate contraceptive provisions to ensure that you do not become pregnant. Pregnancy should be avoided completely during this period.
